Check your Google Maps rank, street by street
Paste your Google listing and a keyword: the tool checks your Google Maps ranking at 25 points around your business and shows it on a map. Free, no signup.
In short. Your Google Maps position is not a single number: it changes with where the customer searches from, because Google takes distance into account. The tool lays a 5 by 5 grid of points, spaced 1.2 km apart, around your address and checks your rank at each of the 25 points. You get your best rank, your average rank, the number of points where you are in the top 3 and top 10, a visibility score out of 100 and the competitors ahead of you at the center.
How the ranking grid works
The tool finds your listing, then queries Google Maps for your keyword from 25 positions: a square 5 by 5 grid centered on your business, with 1.2 km between two points. The grid therefore covers 4.8 km per side, 2.4 km on either side of your address.
At each point, the tool records your rank in the Google Maps results, or the absence of your listing. Checks are run in French, as on a desktop computer.
| Metric | What it means |
|---|---|
| Best rank | Your best position across the 25 points. |
| Average rank | The average of your ranks, over the points where you appear. |
| Top 3 | The number of points where you are in the first 3, the ones Google shows first. |
| Top 10 | The number of points where you are in the first 10. |
| Visibility out of 100 | Each point earns more the higher your rank; a point outside the first 20 earns nothing. 100 means first everywhere. |
| Competitors | The top 5 businesses at the center point, with their rating and review count. |
Why your position changes from one street to the next
Google says it in its help: local ranking relies on three factors, relevance, distance and prominence. On distance, the rule is explicit: “Distance is how far each potential search result is from the location term used in a search.” And when the customer does not share their location: “Google will calculate distance based on what is known about their location.”
As a result, the same keyword does not give the same ranking at your shop's door and two kilometers away. The Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors 2026 study, published on November 6, 2025, ranks the distance between the customer and the business 2nd among local pack factors, right behind the listing's primary category.
You cannot move your address. But the more relevant and well known your listing is, the wider the radius in which you stay in the top 3. That radius is what the map makes visible.
Reading your map
- Green: you are in the top 3 at this point.
- Orange: you are between 4th and 10th place.
- Red: you are between 11th and 20th place.
- Dark red or gray: you are beyond 20th place, or your listing does not appear.
A map that is green at the center and quickly turns red at the edges is the most common case: you rank well with your immediate neighbors, but a better-known competitor takes over as soon as you move away. A map that is red all the way to the center signals a relevance problem: the keyword does not match your category or your information. Test several keywords, your category's and the ones your customers really type.
What to do to climb in Google Maps
Our observatory of 1,800 Google listings, collected on September 25, 2026 across 9 sectors and 10 large cities, gives concrete benchmarks.
- Reviews make the difference, not rating: a median of 738 reviews in the top 5, versus 300 in positions 16 to 20, for the same 4.62 rating.
- Replying to reviews sets you apart: 46% of first-page listings reply to no reviews at all.
- The primary category is the first relevance lever: choose the most precise one, the one that says what your business is.
- Up-to-date hours matter: being open at the time of the search ranks 5th among the factors in the 2026 Whitespark study.
GMB Club, the all-in-one marketing platform for local businesses, tracks your position over time: the full 49-point visibility scan measures your area against your competitors and downloads as a detailed report. The video shows it in the app.

The limits of this check
- The result is a snapshot at one moment: Google Maps rankings move from day to day. Compare checks made a few weeks apart.
- Results are collected as on a desktop computer; on mobile, the order may differ slightly.
- The grid covers 2.4 km around your address. For a wider catchment area, you need a larger grid.
- The tool is limited to 3 scans per connection, and the full map appears after you enter your email.
Frequently asked questions about Google Maps rank
- How do I check my position on Google Maps?
- Paste your Google listing and your keyword into the tool above. It checks your rank at 25 points around your address, which a search from your own phone does not show.
- Why am I first near my shop and invisible elsewhere?
- Because Google takes the distance between the customer and the business into account. From your shop you are the closest; two kilometers away, closer or better-known competitors move ahead.
- Can you pay Google to rank higher in Maps?
- Not for organic ranking. Google writes: “There’s no way to request a better local ranking, or to pay for a better local ranking.” Paid ads are labeled as such.
- Which keyword should I test?
- The one your customers type: your trade, possibly with a flagship product. Avoid your business name, where you will almost always rank first.
- How long does it take to gain places?
- Allow several weeks: new reviews and listing fixes are taken into account gradually. Run another check a month after your changes.
- What is a visibility score of 50 out of 100?
- An average: for example, 11th place across the whole grid, or 1st place on half the points and absent on the other half. Look at the map to see which of the two is yours.
